    notice of that especially when I had the flu and was in bed for a week.  My eyes would get tired from reading when I managed to be awake and I started watching some old sitcoms on TV.  There was a show in the 70s, a spinoff from All in the Famiily about a strong, independent liberal, middle aged woman, Maude played by the very talented Bea Arthur. Well Maude has an abortion because she does not want a baby at age 47 and the show got good ratings and lasted another 5 years. They talked openly about abortion and womens issues and one show even dealt with the Equal Rights Amendment and how it was close to becoming a reality.
    They talked about politics and celebrated progressive issues.

    But then the 80s came and I do not recall a single sitcom dealing with social issues like these 7os era shows did.
