I don't think we can fix the problem. Once Barack Obama steps down from office at the end of his second term, assuming it's not another minority who wins the nomination, we should see some rebound, but at the same time, I don't see a lot of white people willing to switch sides. Why? Because they see Dems as "more concerned about the poor" with "hand out programs". As much as fencesitters among white people may not be socially intolerant, unless we can get a better message, I'm not sure what we can offer them.

Being a white guy, I know something about being, well ... being white.

Today I was talking to this other white guy when he blurts out that his preacher told him this past Sunday that Obama was about to sign the "Desolation of Abomination" (though I think he would spell it "Obamanation").

It was all I could do not to roll my eyes.

I politely told him that I think that has to happen in Israel, so don't worry too much about Obama "signing" any such thing.

Anyway, there's a lot of white voters out there who are pretty far out there.  As a race, I think we're pretty much hopeless.

To a Democrat, "democracy" means "free elections." To a Republican, "free markets."

Wow, that is a really creepy thing to say.  Jeeez.

It's not creepy to engage in some self-examination, and come to a conclusion that many whites are gullible to being manipulated by fear and greed, and fall into the "look, someone to look down on and blame for my misery" trap offered by various forms of racial prejudice.

At times I have wondered what may have been lost from our Caucasian brains, when the white race developed its current morphological form from the evolutionary pressure of millennia of living in cloudy and cold climates, with no doubt a lot of mortality caused by winter weather.

All races have been cruel to other races over time, but white wingnut tendencies seem such a stretch because most of the folks who fit that description are relatively well-off. They are certainly not starving or homeless, so what's the excuse?

To address the main question this diary raises, maybe many, or most, of the folks who live in the more rural areas just don't like people very much, and those who live in that 800 people per sq. mile density or greater do tend to like others better. That's a simple way of stating that, yes, but research somewhere may bear that out.

Disclosure: We (my wife and I) live in a rural area, probably 70 or so people per sq. mile, and we do have a number of liberal friends in the area, but this is Western Oregon and demographics here may not be typical.

Can you imagine the outcry here if any race other than white was inserted in that sentence?

Sure, there are a lot of tea party crazies now (though I think they are just wearing the the latest wardrobe of the same 20% who supported bush/cheney to the bitter end, and the 20% of whites who are hardcore, flagrant racists).  And of course we've got the Nazis, and Stalin, and the pogroms, and slavery, and the extermination of the Tasmanians and Native American tribes, and the Inquisition, etc, etc.  But then again there was Mao and Pol Pot, and bin Laden, and Tibet, and the mass WW2 Japanese atrocities, and slavery. and the attempted eradication of the Kurds by Hussein, and then there's Rwanda, and Idi Amin, and the mass rapes in South Africa, and Darfur, and Mengistu, and slavery, and the Congo.

White people have no particular propensity to be motivated by fear and greed and blind group allegiances.

I just believe it is very important to abhor any gross racial generalities of innate behavior.  Think of the diversity of human thought and underlying goodness in your own neighborhood, or family,  Even in our state of Georgia, in the most redneck, cracker-infested, all-white little counties, 20% voted for Obama.  Not to be obvious, but that's one in five people. White people.  Obama got 9 million votes among white men even.

At any rate, many groups in history have started classing certain races, tribes, or ethnic groups as being somehow innately "different."  It is very disturbing to me when the left in this country starts down that path.
