  •  Bigot-speak, yes. Truth-speak, no way. (4+ / 0-)

I say if the shoe fits, wear it. White, racist people who couldn't care less if poor people of all colors starve or freeze to death are never going to be convinced to vote Democratic.

But most white people even pretty conservative ones don't want to see people starve to death and casting blanket aspersions on these people isn't going to convince them to vote Democratic either.

unless their own very existence is so immediately threatened that the threat breaks through the fog of their ignorance, blind tribal allegiance, and prejudice.

I say we concentrate on defining our constituency based on the social ends we believe in. Small business should be in our tent, religious institutions actually preoccupied with compassion and social works should be in our tent, workers should be in our tent, small farmers and ranchers should be in our tent.

Short of capitulating on abortion rights and perhaps gun control, the only way to win in rural areas is to offer the people living there the tools to improve their lives. This means ag policies targeted at small farmers, health care delivery and insurance, keeping the USPS intact, rural high-speed internet, what else? In a nearby rural county, the county's phone/cable/internet provider used to make available to customers free access to online training on Microsoft Office products, an accounting package, and other subjects -- practical tools for improving one's employability, one's ability to run a business, etc. Would initiatives like this be useful to rural southern / midwest communities?

Our party should serve the not-wealthy, and micro-to-small business. If we do this, and if we pay attention to a consistent 50-state policy, we won't have to worry about the color makeup/balance of the party.

To those who think that putting much energy into changing the political inclinination of adult authoritarians will have much of an effect, please read Bob Altemeyer's The Authoritarians, or John Dean's Conservatives Without Conscience.

Then let's talk. You may come to believe that you would largely be pissing in the wind, and, to evoke Neil Young, '...there ain't nothing like a friend, who can tell you when you're pissing in the wind...'
