  •  Thanks, karmsy... we have about 20 working (9+ / 0-)

groups now... San Diego, Austin, Portland, Maryland, Mass, Gainesville (and Tampa), Hilo and Maui, Seattle (with The Backbone Campaign), North Texas, and a bunch of others... These are also often tied to full-on Occupy groups, or remnants of Occupy groups. Occupy kind of lurks behind a lot that we do at this point. I see Occupy as still very, very vital and look forward to its next massive expression.

    •  Why did the police target peaceful (6+ / 0-)

Occupy demonstrators for violent repression, in city after city? Why did the corporate media misrepresent Occupy, highlighting the "violence" and "lawlessness" of the protesters? Generally, why was snuffing out Occupy an official priority?

I believe it was the recognition of the machine--and its terror at the prospect--of the fundamental power of people taking to the streets in numbers to demand social justice.

My hope is that these Occupy demonstrators didn't really go away, that they'll be back. I hope they've learned lessons the first time around, to ignite a grassroots movement the likes of which we've never seen, one that can't be ignored or glossed-over.

It's here they got the range/ and the machinery for change/ and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. --Leonard Cohen

      •  Because Occupy was a confrontation (1+ / 0-)

and society deals with confrontation with cops.
Occupy was Stonewall was Haight-Ashbury was Birmingham.
It was the snap and a signifying event. It was a focal experience even for people far away from anything worth occupying. And it was given widely different interpretations even by those who were there from the first. That is part of what made it such a galvanic event.
        As this poster writes:

Occupy kind of lurks behind a lot that we do at this point.
These actions are very informative and great organizing locii and they reduce the direct confrontation that provokes a hostile police action.
        That's smart activism.
Fleet foot, make your mark, make your exit and get ready for the next one. And don't have to wash off the pepper spray.
Sounds to me like lessons were learned and some of the shear inventiveness is being channeled by some earned wisdom.
        I love it!

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!
