  •  Part of the problem is Soviet historical treatment (13+ / 0-)

Most of the places where these camps and centers were established came under Soviet control after WW2.  The Soviet and Soviet-satellite regimes wanted to:

    1.  De-religionize (that's a word, right?) the victims, so Polish Jews were treated as Poles.

    2.  Exaggerate the number of victims at least in certain cases.

For example, at Auschwitz the Soviets claimed 4 million were killed, whereas the actual and already sufficiently atrocious number was about 1.1 million.  In another example, the Soviets claimed that 40,000 or so were killed at Rumbula when the actual number was about 25,000 -- again, bad enough, but always the Soviets seemed to add numbers.

    3.  Over-emphasize the participation of local nationalist groups in the killings.  The Nazis employed a great number of locals in the course of carrying out the destruction of the Jews, the full extent of this has never been completely settled and remains a matter of controversy.   However the Soviets always went to the high end on the degree participation by local nationalists.

    4.  Closing the records and preventing independent investigations.  This went on until 1991 or so -- by this time the historical trail had gone pretty cold.

You have exactly 10 seconds to change that look of disgusting pity into one of enormous respect!
