  •  something to remember about Carroll (13+ / 0-)

that besides himself being a former priest and Catholic Chaplain at Boston University, his father was Joseph Carroll, who had been an FBI Special Agent, was assigned to and then commissioned by the Air Force in 1948 and assigned to intelligence and rose to General and head of the Defense Intelligence Agency

Besides his personal exploration of Europe as a young man among other times, I would suspect there were some serious conversations with his father, and Carroll would have had more than the ordinary Catholic's understanding of the role of the Church in the 1930s and 1940s.

That said, one also has to note that within the Church there were those who did what they could to protect Jews -  that included Angelo Roncalli as papal legate in Istanbul, one reason that when he became Pope John XXXIII he was so positively receive by the Jewish community.  The community around Assissi was notorious as a way station for smuggling Jews away from the Nazis after they occupied Italy.  And regardless of his other faults, John Paul II maintained lifelong good relations with Jews, and his personal musician was a Jew.

That said, the history of the Catholic Church in its dealings with the Jews is a mixed bag with far too much of the mixture being dark.
