You are right people, in general, can be very sentimental about babies (as long as they are the "right kind" of baby, mind, you.)

But don't you think limiting resource consumption is just as important if not more important than population control?

Think of it this way: the relatively tiny population of the USA uses far more resources than much larger population in other nations.

If we want to tie some kind of environmental guilt to having kids than only the richest people should be concerned. Those are the kids who will likely have the biggest impact on the environment.

Though in reality the best way to limit population growth seems to be to make contraceptives and abortions  available while at the same time aggressively fighting infant and child mortality.

Some of the places with high birth rates also have high mortality. So it makes sense in a way.

    It's also sad.

I think it is incorrect to view birth rates as an environmental problem. Without also looking at rates of resource consumption birth rates are meaningless from an environmental perspective.

But I think it's more important to stop treating children as a must have accessory, people really don't need kids to make their lives complete. In fact many people would be better off without them.

Poor people harm the environment as well, poor areas use firewood for heating which causes quite a bit of pollution, not to mention the resources used to feed everyone. Most people in china still live in poverty but they still manage to pollute quite a bit, not to mention the raw sewage produced by a lot of people in one area, and the land required to feed and house lots of people is land that no longer has a forest.
