    obvious has to be said- most black people who grew up in dirt poor, hungry poor circumstances and made it are...not rightists like Clarence Thomas.

      enough to not have said it, but it's fine you did.

      He's a conundrum in his beliefs given his background. The above poster had met him and, basicaly, answered my question.

      Thomas is one who thinks he got there largely through his own hard work so therefore if others wanted to do same little is in their way. He seemingly concludes--like so many on the right do--that others just don't work  hard enough.
      Discounting the millions who actually do but do not make it.

        discount all the non-rightist black people who work hard and make it. They've put forth the idea that black people can't make it if they're not conservative, and a lot of people buy it, even though the reality is staring them in the face.
