"Todd Akin is too conservative for Missouri" pushes up Akin's vote because the typical GOP primary base has more true believers for whom a candidate can never be too conservative than pragmatists who just want to win.

In most cases, Dem primary bases are the opposite. "Ilya Sheyman is too liberal for IL-10" would probably have the net effect of convincing a bunch of Dems to vote for Brad Schneider.

I'm sure if Jim Cooper had a primary opponent I doubt his attacks of "my opponent is too liberal for TN" would stick that well.

But yeah the Dems do tend to be more pragmatic when it comes to the primaries.

In fact, the occasional victory for the GOP cannot hide the fact that this country is fast heading into another era, not of two-party democracy, but a party-and-a-half system. And the GOP is the half a party- Larry Sabato

People on this site have argued that Cooper should be primaried by a mainstream Dem, not an Akin equivalent. The TN5 equivalent of Todd Akin would be someone who would lose that D+5 district to a Republican, maybe a Cynthia McKinney type. GOP ads "attacking" that candidate as too liberal would likely drive Cooper's vote up.
