Obama wasn't even sworn in yet when Brian Moran's seat in the House of Delegates from very liberal Alexandria was won only by a hair by the Democrat, Charnielle Herring, who is still in the seat and also just became state party chair.

Then just after Obama was sworn in and still with job approval in the 60s, the Democrat for Fairfax County Board Chair, Sharon Bulova, barely eeked out a razor-thin escape in what had years since become a very Democratic county.  The was an office made vacant by previous Board Chair Gerry Connolly's election to Congress.

Then the newly-elected Bulova's district county supervisor seat was lost very narrowly to a Republican in an upset.

All these were special elections in the first 3 months of 2009, all because of Democratic election fatigue after the big 2008 win.

I bet what just happened in Iowa City is very similar.  People are exhausted, they don't want to think about an election again so soon.
