        Imprison them for life without parole, fine by me, but for me, the state shouldn't be given the power to kill a person, period.

        those punished most severely for crimes were people like priests and judges, who were expected to be exemplary, not people who killed priests and judges, if I remember correctly. Similarly, it might make more sense to more severely punish cops for murder than to more severely punish people who kill cops for murder. I'm not exactly taking a position on this (and the discussion is off-topic, anyway), but just giving you something to think about.
