      It's confidence-breaking, in the opposite way as the right's self-assurance is confidence-building. And people love confidence.

      One great thing about those Republican quasi-demagogues (like, say, Michele Bachmann) is how completely cocksure they are. I mean, speaking as a very reflective person, it seems like an amazing gift to know you're right about everything and everybody agrees with you.

      Or, as Bertrand Russell said, "One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision"
