  •  True story from CO (13+ / 0-)

One year later, family recalls mountain lion attack, fighting back. Neat story, good info.

20 people in North America killed by cougars between 1890 and 2011. More info on prevention, reaction.

Major problem are children unaccompanied or too far from parents in wilderness area. One victim was a mom protecting her child.

Adults alone in and near wilderness areas are just as vulnerable.

I've always felt more uncomfortable about cougars in CO  than I did about grizzlies in AK. Partly because grizzlies are usually very willing to change direction when they hear or smell people. Bells work.  So does a .44. Grizzlies can be amazingly fast, but they are huge and can't be as quiet as a cougar.

    •  My son lives in Bozeman. (6+ / 0-)

Last year in the late summer an adolescent came down and killed several of the neighbors, goats.  He hung out in the unmown pasture behind their houses which have no other houses between them and Green Mtn.  My son and his wife has two girls.  That was a nervous summer.  They hung out for him one night, setting one of the goat carcasses in the field.  One shot by the farmer (who also has young kids) missed him and he was gone.

Not many people believe me but I saw a pre-adolescent in Washington, ME about 17 years ago crossing Rte 17 from a state base yard  to wooded area next to Bump Hill Road - fronted by a hunting supply store!

I know what cougars look like. I used to be one.  WSU had a live cougar mascot when I went there.  He was cooped up.  Very cruel.  They got rid of her ("Butch" - so I just assumed) in the late 70s I think.

The diarist should drop the "?" from the title.  You can tell by the muzzle and the tail. That's a full grown one.

Great cougar sub plot in "Cloudsplitter" by Banks, btw.

I will be well informed about Cougars if ever it happens.

Are you a CO wildflower lover? If so read on. If not, is anyone?

Is it July--I am that far away from my dream of winning the lottery--which I do not play--and then going round the world to the appropriate time for peak wild flowers in all the accessible peaks ....

I have seen narcissus on lower slopes in Switzerland and wild flowers in lower slopes in galil in Israel, but the more ordinary types, just by chancing on the right time after the right kind of winter.
