    The idiocy of this: (24+ / 0-)

    Worst case

    1. Democrats stupidly agree to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to get a bad faith Movement Conservative Borg to sign off on passing their own policy from the 1990's.

    2. The GOP runs against the Democrats for cutting Social Security and Medicare. Shades of 2010, including the Village media tagteam helps them do it, and glossing over the ract that the GOP voted for the cuts too.

    3. They re-take the Senate in 2014, to go along with added House seats not less. Senator Ted Cruz now has a gavel to go along with his reckless and insane ambitions.

    4. The GOP comes back at you, maybe immediately, maybe in six months to a year, certainly after the next election cycle and claim the GOP's positive election results are a mandate for more cuts to Social Security and Medicare. The Social Safety Net is now treated in future policy discussions as welfare, not a commitment and a promise. Once it's not the Third Rail anymore, it's going to get the death of a thousand cuts.

    5. Cue up the Clinton-esque Obama impeachment debacle, while idiots rant about how 'the base didn't show up' in previous election cycle, ignoring the role of the Democratic Party in their own misfortunes, Obama gets mugged by the very people he's willing to cut a bad deal with. All that Ben Ghazi and Fast and the Furious shit goes from a distraction to a very real threat to this President with that power shift. If they don't impeach him, they will chew up the rest of his Presidency with investigations and even worse engineered crises.

Bonus Fail: Any hypothetical or actual savings generated by Social Safety Net go into justifying or fueling "the need for" the next massive GOP tax cut for the Wealthy, and Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson are two of the biggest draws at the balls and galas celebrating President Jeb Bush and Vice President Marco Rubio in 2016.

The Democratic Party is swamped with calls to 'move to the center' in response to the mess. Something that should put the party about where Joe Machin is right now.

What is it going to take? Another lost decade where the GOP, despite demographics, get another George W. Bush era with his brother Jeb?

There is no good faith in Movement Conservatism.

The next thing the GOP will be asking for is the retirement age to be 70 or 75. Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles will be back with another freak-out in a few years. They'll want to means test it for wealthy people, which is a scam to make Social Security easier to call it welfare and not a promise or a commitment.

There is no bargain to be made that will stick.

They are, right now as we speak, preparing for Antonin Scalia to gut Section Five of the Civil Rights Act. Despite overwhelming support. Despite overwhelming need for it to continue. Their agenda comes first. There is no such thing as "settled" law or a "done" deal with this Rightwing.

You will never, ever "take anything off the table once and for all" with a so-called "Grand Bargain". The GOP will be back, sooner rather than later, calling for more cuts and more cuts and more cuts.

There will not be a lick of longterm deficit reduction once there is a Republican President in the White House to start up the maga tax cuts again.

The Republican Party is, at this point, saving a Democratic President from himself.

The only way to stop this shit is to make it so that every Democrat is scared shitless to have cutting Social Security on their hands going into 2014 and 2016. That's the fatal flaw in the "grand" bargain theory of stupid American politics. They have to face the voters again.

I'm betting Senator Ted Cruz with a gavel is not going to be good for Obama longterm. One way for that to happen is to kill the Democratic Parties credibility on Social Security.

We can stop this, and stop it without destroying Obama, by working to make this impossible to pass.

If anything like this happens, the Democrats will have fucked themselves, and given the GOP another decade or so of undeserved power, influence, and relevance.

You can't take advantage of demographics if the GOP keeps ratfucking minorities out of their votes unabaited, AND on top of that fight you lose the credibility you need to get those shifting demographics to stay with you.

    •  I have a much better idea (11+ / 0-)

Let's just skip the part where they all have to write books 20 years from now apologizing for doing something so stupid by making this impossible to happen.

If you vote for a Chained CPI, or big Medicare cuts, because in 2013 you are too stupid to notice the GOP we have rather than the GOP you wish existed, you might as well not run for re-election.

This is an intelligence test for non-Movement Conservatives.

You have to run for re-election as a Democrat. You don't have a back bench of billionaires to fund you via Citizen's United. You need the little guy to send you the 20 bucks and show up and work for you.

Cut Social Security and see how that works out for you.

      •  Little guys need to wield big power (11+ / 0-)

The unions are the essential player here in bringing the Democrats into line.  I don't know why unions don't threaten to withdraw their support from elected Democrats unless certain conditions are met, starting with protecting Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid benefits.

But groups like this blog community could also throw some weight around.  Individually we mean nothing to Obama, but if Daily Kos were to publicly change its orientation, and make its support for "more and better Democrats" conditional on saving entitlements, TPTB in Washington would sit up and notice.
