    •  angry marmot, I'm thinking about donating some (3+ / 0-)

time to help Kentucky and Texas out from under the boots of randian rule.

      •  All y'all artists... read up and consider this (4+ / 0-)

Artist Relocation Program in Paducah, KY.

        Rand Paul's adopted hometown.

A house for $1 in an area of flourishing redevelopment for artists. A $2500 professional design assistance to kick start.

Imagine what could happen if a bunch of wild-eyed liberal artsy types brought a Renaissance Revival to Kentucky and the force to counter the Randbots. Now that's a revival salvation show.

I used to live in a small town about an hour's drive southeast of Paducah, KY.

It was a town of about 1000 people, right on the banks of the Mississippi River, and it had the typical small town "values."  (eg, rampant racism, political bickering over who hosted the Cub Scout meetings, gossip over the smallest things.)  In a rare stroke of foresight, the town fathers named the town...I kid you not...Hickman, KY .

          Synchronicity is alive and well.

          •  Correction. Due to the sequester, I fail (2+ / 0-)

geography.  "...an hour's drive southwest of Paducah, KY."

            Sorry bout that.

when people don't speak up and let the assholes spew their hate.

The big mouths and pushy people just seem to be larger than they really are. Even in small towns.

And Hickman is a small farming community, BUT there are good people there.

            Lots of them.

            •  I don't disagree, (0+ / 0-)

but when the good is shouted over by the patently evil, when the good is glossed over by the status "well, it could be worse" quo mentality, when the good is defeated by complacency, then no amount of good people can effect any sort of change.

And that's the political environment of that town, as of my last update about it, approximately 3 months ago.

              •  Sue Whayne passed away years ago... (0+ / 0-)

and her passion and fight seem to have been the sustaining energy of the area.

She helped establish a local watchdog group. The Hickman County Local Government Project (LGP), which served as a watchdog over local government and encouraged citizen participation in government. It has folded up and is out of business. For now.

All it takes is for one person to step up and revive Sue's passion and energy. Pick up the pieces from Sue's legacy and begin anew to take back their local government.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever does.

                •  For reference, and as mind explodingly confusing (0+ / 0-)

As this is, Hickman County doesn't contain Hickman. Hickman is the county seat of Fulton County...
Confused yet? I was as a kid.
