      workers live.
A relative of mine who worked on Wall Street was offered a promotion to go to  San Francisco office. He'd get a $250,000 raise in the job. That's raise, not salary or bonus.
He went out there and looked around... and found the cost of everything was too much for a man with a family to support.

He's lived in NY and Princeton, made me wonder how SF could seem that bad.
But in any case I always wonder about teachers or waiters or secretaries or janitors or clerks that work in these cities, that these cities need to function...where and how do they live? If they commute is their transport paid in addition to wages? Is there decent low cost housing I don't know about?

That guy has a serious problem even in San Francisco to not be able to support a family on $250k/year, let alone that being his raise. Cities like that are expensive, but not that expensive.
