  •  That is awesome. I love the Internet :) (6+ / 0-)

Had to send that to my 87 year old Dad, whose been building houses since his early 20's, while doing R&D as a PhD in building materials. Along with this solar report. The last house he built in '75 had a geothermal system.

Stuff like this makes me hope and believe that the good part of humanity might survive and prosper.

    •  heh, can I hire your 87 year old Dad, (4+ / 0-)

I am sure he would be the best of the best ... and he could teach my son some stuff... :-)

So, what are the best building materials for someone who doesn't trust plywood walls. I am a brick-lover kind of girl.

I want solar, tile stoves, underfloor heating and thick walls with extra insulation, heavy doors and the best windows I can find...

I am allowed to dream and joke, am I not?

      •  His wife was hired for a (2+ / 0-)

Peace Corps admin job in Kyrgyzstan after they had done two years as volunteers in Kenya where he turned 65. The new post was still in development, the 'anystans' were new to PC because of the dissolution of the USSR.

Dad went to work on upgrading and expanding the facility for PC and some work at the new Embassy as well. They threw a 70th birthday barbecue and gave him a 'gold' hammer.

Since retiring he's been building cabinets for Habitat for Humanity. At 83 he went with a group to help rebuild a church of our denomination in Romania. The supervisor asked him if he wanted a job...

Variation on a prefab exterior wall you might like.  There are other manufacturers with different compositions.

I figure if you have a working dream you are more likely to recognize an opportunity to do it if it is out there.
