  •  I've already lost my job. We wrote software for (7+ / 0-)

    the government.

With all the uncertainty, various agencies stopped signing new contracts.

With not enough money coming in to pay ys, my company laid off a number of people.

    Thanks a lot, Republicans!

I'll be OK unless Obama agrees to cut Social Security and Medicare.

    •  That's the impact people don't get (0+ / 0-)

and they also don't get that it will take time to get those contracts going again once the sequester ends.  The contracting officers will be buried so nothing but the most essential contracts will get through for months.

      •  Don't worry too much. The President is now (0+ / 0-)

directly trying to strike his Grand Bargain to cut Social Security and Medicare with Republican Senators Susan Collins (Maine) and Tom Coburn (Oklahoma), according to Reuters.  [H/T Corrente]

Here's an excerpt from the Reuters piece [03/03/13] entitled, "WRAPUP 2-Budget crisis eases as Republicans seek to avoid shutdown."  Here's the link.

        * Obama makes more calls to Republican senators

        * Republicans announce plan to prevent government shutdown

        * Measure seeks to extend funding for agencies to Sept. 30

        * Pentagon would get more flexibility than domestic agencies

An aide to Collins, a moderate, told Reuters that the pair discussed the need for a bipartisan agreement on critical issues such as reining in the $16.7 trillion federal debt and dealing with the cuts, also known as sequestration.

In telephone calls over the weekend, Obama raised the issue of cutting entitlement programs, which include Medicare, the healthcare program for the elderly and disabled, and Social Security retirement benefits.
"I will continue to seek out partners on the other side of the aisle so that we can create the kind of balanced approach of spending cuts, revenues, entitlement reform that everybody knows is the right way to do things," he said at the start of a Cabinet meeting on Monday.

So, it appears that there's no need to worry. It's looking like the President will be able to trade entitlement cuts and tax revenues, in order to keep from cutting "discretionary" spending.

        •  I swear to God I'll join the Communist party if (0+ / 0-)

Obama sells us out on Social Security and Medicare.

For that will prove that the Democratic Party has become useless.
