one side brings up registration, the other says no, because of the danger of later confiscation.  usually, this is responded to with unsupported assertions that confiscations will never happen.
Please tell me, how does one prove a negative?  How does one prove that confiscation will "never happen" in a world in which so many things are at least theoretically (but not realistically) possible?  I'd be very interested in finding out how this proof of negatives works.

Oh, and since you're worried about assertions that aren't supported, what's your factual basis for this claim:

after being assured that confiscation will somehow never happen, the gun owners usually bring up the times in our recent history when it has, in fact, happened.
BTW, would you mind limiting yourself to American examples, please?  I'm a history buff myself, but if you're going to pull out something like Nazi Germany or China, I'm not going to be terribly interested.
