    there are still some stone hedgerows outlining fields, but many have been sold, caged up in gabions, and removed by a company that resells them.

    I've even heard of stone walls being stolen.

    My favorites are the old WPA-built walls that line a couple of back roads around here. They almost always have an indentation for a spring, where people fill their water jugs.
