You are on page 152 of "The Chains of the Sea!"

Next stop...Skull Island...and a very curious King Kong...

"Quick," I ululated. “Jump for the ape! It's the only way." And we all jumped onto Kong. I jumped a bit late but managed to grab the hair around his rear as he moved away. The smell was horrible but we were alive and the ape loped off into the jungle. As I looked back I thought I saw figures in khaki moving in the moonlight as I grimly held on to the great beast's ass.

I reflected briefly on the wonders of creation. Up above me -- in the darkness -- Jeri was singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." What a wonderful voice she had. Somehow I felt that we were all at home.

Life is beautiful, my friends. And strange.

We traveled for what was the rest of the night. Jeri sang all of "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Music Man." She was well into "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" when the sun peeped over the jungle treetops and Kong stopped in a clearing. We quickly climbed down and scrambled for the shelter of some rocks as Kong set the Professor in the fork of some strange prehistoric tree.

It was one of the strangest things I've ever seen. Kong began it. By God could that ape sing! The song was “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me.”

    "I was feeling done in
    Couldn't win
    I'd only ever kissed before…”
    Etc.

And the expression on Kong's face was so…so very human…that we all were touched!

And then in the deepest voice I have ever heard he said “Now, dear professor. Tell me of Jacques Lacan.”

“Please take this. It is a partial manuscript of the adventure of The Visionary Company way back before you joined. Perhaps it will inspire the others. Joey is the author. (She had never read it, of course). Read it to the others. Perhaps it will inspire them! Now, go forth and gather Arthur himself, Gawain the Great, Agravain Brother of Gawain, Gaheris Brother of Gawain. Gareth Brother of Gawain, Lancelot Greatest Knight of the Round Table who was, of course screwed around with Arthur's wife. Galahad, he of the Holy Grail and really the Greatest Knight of the Round Table but the girls like Lancelot, Parsifal Knight of the Round Table. Bors Knight of the Round Table. Pellinor Knight of the Round Table. Bedivere Knight of the Round Table and last one to see Arthur alive and finally Caradoc Knight of the Round Table, noted for being the husband of the only lady in the queen's train who could wear "the mantle of matrimonial fidelity." What was her name, La Belle?”
