    ... given that the bullets fired will continue on through walls, doors, modest armor, ... rather than stopping with whatever they hit.

    Unless burglars/home invaders in your neighborhood wear heavy armor when committing their crimes.

      I posted a previous essay (A Note To You (the gun owner))
      in a number of Connecticut Patch newspapers two weeks ago - there were over 1,000 community comments....and what i learned is that logic is not a big part of opposition to gun control - it's symbolic, cultural, visceral. It is therefore maddening to reason with much of the opposition. It's in their blood.

      Wrong.  heavy grain FMJ .223 will overpenetrate.  Hollow points and frangibles lightly loaded will not.  Great thing about the .223 caliber, is that its so popular there's a wide variety of loads for various circumstances.

      Semiautomatic rifles and carbines are excellent home and personal defense weapons.  That's why law enforcement and the military use them.
