    And during that time he averaged popularity ratings in the 70-80% range among the Colombian people, remarkly similary to Chavez in that regard. But the difference is, Uribe during his presidency disarmed the paras, while Chavez gave aid and comfort to the FARC.

    I'll also give you a little bit of a history lesson from someone who actually lived there. During the 1980's through much of the 1990's, living in much of Colombia, you were either a supporter of the local militias (be they right or left) or you were a victim of them. There was little middle ground.

    Uribe, as a child had to watch as FARC guerillas murdered his Father right in front of him. After that, he had the choice of supporting them or the Paras. What would you, what would any of us have done? It's easy for gringos to point fingers across the continents and say ooh, he was a supporter of those bad people when he was alone and powerless. But it's quite another to do the exact opposite once he achieved the reigns of power.
