do you have reason to believe that your president could assassinate you?  I'm pretty sure that if you're on the no-fly list, you don't get notified or told why you are on there.

If the govt. sends out a National Security letter on you (FBI sends out a lot of them, recipients are not allowed to tell you about it), should you start worrying about potential harm?

And as time goes on and these extraordinary powers fall into hands of people like George Bush again, or some more despicable creature, should political enemies fear for their lives?

    •  The problem is that this is a fake issue. (0+ / 0-)

Bush had no difficulty asserting totally unprecedented dictatorial powers a mere nine months after a decade of peace and prosperity, and another psychopath like him would have no trouble doing so again regardless of what policies this administration pursues.  No one threatened by such a regime would be silenced because they're told there's precedent, nor would a regime like that refrain from claiming precedent even if there were none.

But this administration hasn't asserted such a power, nor are they likely to ever. They've merely noted the fact (not opinion) that military exigencies have existed (e.g., the day of 9/11, and Pearl Harbor) where undeclared martial law authority could conceivably have been justified.   If you think there are no possible circumstances where federal martial law applies, then that is not a reality-based position.

What is reality-based is to focus on the breakdown of Constitutional checks and balances that occurred under Bush, and the breakdown of civic engagement on our part that allowed traitors to have effective control of all three branches.  If we allow that to happen again, some remote-possibility hypothetical statement made by Eric Holder is going to be the least of our worries.  And if we guard against that kind of corruption diligently and successfully, then the scenario you're talking about will never become an issue.

Ask me if I'm afraid. I say, "Of course not. I'm a fool, and fools never die."

    •  I would add that the only reason this issue arose (0+ / 0-)

was because Rand Paul asked whether such a power existed, obviously fishing for political chum to throw to his paranoid black-helicopter militia base.  And the only reason he's allowed to do that by his fascist Party is because we have a Democratic President.
