  •  They haven't used whalebone (11+ / 0-)

since whales went on the endangered species list, silly. They use either sprung steel or spiral steel bones.

As the World's Oldest Living Goth and an SCA Lady who wears Renaissance Italian and Cavalier gowns, I've worn corsets. I've also made several including a Victorian style corset of the sort whose laces need loosening above.  Keira Knightley's character in Pirates of the Caribbean to the contrary, they aren't torture devices and they aren't particularly uncomfortable, unles you're tightt-lacing which is defines as pulling in the waist over 4 inchs (not recommended). They DO restrict movements--but much worse than a bustier or a longline bra00actually I'd prefer the corset over either of those.  A corset needs to be made to order to you own measurements--and I wore one all day at a con, and another in the evening, so I was corseted for 12 hours or more and was comfortable the whole time--the day corset was an underbust corset, the night one a long Victorian.  I wore them with skirts.

Now if you want truly uncomfortable garments, try an orthopedic corset which has inch or more wide steel (not the kind I linked to above) bones that do not allow any movement.  They're designed to hold your back immobile to allow healing of an injury. I wore one of thsoe for 4 months in senior year in high school. They do what they're supposed to do--in my case, prevent my damned teacher from forcing me to do gymnastics with a major back injury (the bitch).

But, really a good corset is restrictive but not uncomfy or painful  Elizabeth Swann lied! (or maybe they had to tightlace Knightley in an attempt to give her cleavage, an impossibility when your chest is flatter than Johnny Depp's).

Just in the interest of  stating the truth about corsets!

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.
