  •  Have to get the Feds onboard or else. (9+ / 0-)

The country is signatory to multiple international treaties regarding various drugs, including marijuana.

Whether we like those treaties or not, the U.S. government signed onto them and they were legally ratified.

Individual states simply can NOT override the federal government, especially in matters of international treaty which the Congress ratified, all 100% according to our constitution.

I find the War On Drugs as abhorent as the next person.  Or more so.  It's vile, wasteful, and harmful.  It exists only to enrich the worst parts of our society: organized crime and law enforcement agencies.

That said, none of us here want individual states to be able to override federal law.

None of us here want individual states to be able to put the nation into a position of having violated treaties we've signed onto.

Imagine Arizona resuming above ground nuclear testing, just as one wild example.

No, we have to have our government do this, withdraw us from the various treaties that are involved, which is damn near impossible since we've been shoving those treaties down everyone else's throat's for 50 years.

Basically, we're fucked.  The states like Washington and Colorado will be cracked down on, hard, by the feds, and the feds really don't have much choice.  They HAVE to crack down on this.  It's either that, or work to legalize (and as mentioned, withdraw us from a whole raft of treaties which WE wrote and shoved down everyone else's throat at gunpoint for 50 years).
