  •  obama's failure (7+ / 0-)

was in getting deficit fever and appointing simpson-bowles in the first place. he never should have raised the issue of deficits, and instead should have been pushing for a second stimulus.

it's a given that the republicans are crazy, and that they will force every showdown they can. obama's mistake has been to play their game on their home field. but he still can turn this all around, just by acting reasonable, allowing the republicans to refuse to bargain one last time, and then shutting it all down and demanding a clean end to sequester.

    •  I do wish Obama had taken a harder line (0+ / 0-)

but not at the cost of the GE, which I believe he could've lost over appearing too extreme...instead, the GOP looked too extreme.

I see what you did there.

by the end of the year, the stimulus was petering out, and krugman and others were warning that if we didn't get another the economy would tank just in time for the 2010 election. they were right.

obama should have at least tried for more stimulus. instead he got deficit fever, the timing of which could not have been worse. had he pushed for a second stimulus, and lost, the struggling economy of 2010 could have been blamed on the republicans.
