  •  US News rankings are not perfect (11+ / 0-)

But they get the general cream of the crop of cancer treatment facilities.

My wife is a pediatric oncologist and if our kids ever needed treatment we'd be off to one of the top twenty hospitals (all of which are academic institutions). Period.

Fox Chase Cancer Center as they are closer to me or maybe even Penn State Hershey which is closer yet and a teaching hospital.  But in all reality, since I hate to travel when ill, I would probably stick with Geisinger as it is very close by and has an excellent cancer treatment program.

      •  It also depends on what you have. (4+ / 0-)

Hopkins is amazing if you have a one in a hundred million cancer.  Not so great if it's a one in one thousand cancer.

If you had something with a good prognosis, a good regional center might be better. They'll be more interested.

for Hopkins as their cancers were very rare.  But my friend who is 12 years cancer free from ovarian cancer was very satisfied and got good care locally.  But I do wish my dad had considered Hopkins but he wanted to stay in state and closer to home, that was his choice. MOm was willing to go elsewhere  but then she went into remission for several months ....and when she was out of remission, her decline was very rapid.

        •  I wish I could rec this 100,000 times (3+ / 0-)

Johns Hopkins has a reputation for paying its marquee docs top dollar while expecting the rest of the staff to treat the cachet of working at Johns Hopkins as part of its compensation. Competent health care professionals with no star power quickly learn they can do better elsewhere.

For myself, I would not go anywhere near them for anything near routine.
