    And if the pile is in direct sunlight, cover it with black plastic to give the pile temp a jumpstart.  That might cook the ants, or force them out, without using chemicals.  Alternately, spread the pile out to dry in a thin layer for a few days, and the ants will move to better digs.  As someone else mentioned, it sounds as if there wasn't enough mass to reach critical temperature.
