Because while I am firmly against the notion that violent media is turning kids into killers (usually pushed by people who want to ban or restrict said media), I do believe that it makes many people delusional about their ability to defend themselves in an actual conflict.

our national psyche wrt the love affair with violence. I want to change our collective belief that Dirty Harry is the answer to our problems.

I'm with you. The perpetuation of violence in our culture is a problem. Do we think that car chases in the movies/TV shows induce people to be reckless drivers? Maybe. But I think we've blunted that by implementing driver's educations and safety regulations. And my making vehicles driven on public roads a lot safer than they used to be.

Here's the "good guy with a gun" fantasy again. No need to know if you can shoot straight, but you have "personal agency" so we need you to be armed so you can take out the bad guy shooter.

In Virginia, a resident can get a concealed carry permit simply by taking a short, on-line course via computer with no training, no requirement to prove the ability to safely handle a pistol or shoot accurately.

In Virginia, with one of the heaviest base of armed civilians in the nation, gun-related deaths outnumber motor vehicle demises.

Virginia is not alone.  Federal government studies show nine other states with gun deaths outnumbering those involving motor vehicles.  The NRA’s response:  The data is flawed.  Funny how data that pokes hole in an organization is always “flawed” while the same organization trots out often-discredited studies to supports its questionable version of “the truth.”
