  •  At the very least, it is responsible for making (8+ / 0-)

it easier for our population to explode which in turn created the need for more agricultural land.

Overly successful species often, or almost always decimate their local environments simply with their consumption and waste production.

Considering, we as a species are not just overly successful, but extremely successful, our influence on the planet, consumption of resources, and waste generated is compounded exponentially.

Physics is bulls**t. Don't let them fool you. Fire IS magic.

true for us. The fact that it seemed to be possible for a relatively small percent of land to affect even the regional climate long before we were burning anything but wood is alarming given how much we have in use today.

It wasn't very long ago that (my fuzzy memory is not sure of details) one of the climate statements by a large group of scientists specifically laid overpopulation at the base of the whole climate debacle.

Since I have spent 50 years in constantly increasing anger about the force of religion and macho cultural values keeping billions from realizing the danger of excess breeding, I am caught between deep sympathy for the innocents who will die and wishing vengeance for the perps - who will stick to their religious delusions in the face of mass destruction.

The fertility goddesses are among the first worshiped, and the lack of concern until about 200 years ago is not surprising. Neither is the human inability to change a fundamental practice when it is so central to belief systems.
