  •  God is absolute values from external source (0+ / 0-)

in whose name all things are justified, whether that name is YHWH, Jehovah, Allah, or Mammon.  That is the true function of the divine: apologetics for the world and for man and his works.

Voltaire remarked that "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him". We cannot function in an intellectual environment bereft of values, of moral content, of "ought" and "ought not".  Without values, choice is impossible, because the very concepts of right and wrong (distinct and more fundamental than definitions) are absent.  All that's left is an animal existence driven by physical need; you eat, sleep, and perform bodily functions, but it doesn't mean anything to you, and you probably wouldn't do any of those things if you didn't have to.

Consequently, if we are not provided with values by someone or something else, we will create values of our own.  This is exactly what Nietzsche proposes we do: because gods do not exist, we must invent our own values ... and believe in them and practice them as diligently and passionately as if they really had been handed down on Mount Sinai.
