  •  Some political science to ponder: (7+ / 0-)

Ryan D. Enos had a piece in the Washington Post that might cool some of the "GOP is doomed by demographics" overconfidence here. In "How the demographic shift could hurt Democrats, too" he cites experiments that lead to another possibility:

It’s assumed that, as the United States becomes increasingly non-white, white Democrats will continue to support the party. But a substantial amount of social-science evidence suggests a different conclusion: As the United States becomes more racially and ethnically diverse, liberal whites might start leaning Republican.
After exploring this possibility and the fact that certain other social actions counter that reactionary trend he notes those fall in line with other Democratic ideals:
For example, a progressive tax code and liberal social spending are designed to promote economic equality. And immigration reform proposals, such as the Dream Act, are designed to more fully integrate institutions such as colleges and the military.

The recognition that liberals’ policies can not only establish their ideological goals but also help maintain their political majority should give Democrats greater urgency in their legislative efforts to promote equality.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
