    No, you can't separate economics from ecology anymore.

    I have something even more radical than all your cars, HIGH SPEED RAIL. That's what should be going on in Detroit right now. Get people out of their cars then we can stop covering the landscape with roads.

      30 years ago we had an opportunity to do high speed rail right, but that window has slammed shut.  There are prices to pay for making mistakes.  HSR will never, ever be a solution to our transportation problems.

      If we environmentalists keep thinking in 19th century terms, the planet is truly doomed.

        Yes, I think we do need to go back to the pre-car period and rethink the whole transportation issue. Many cities in the world have reached "Peak Car." Vancouver BC is one example, I invite you up here. It wouldn't matter if your car was run on waste restaurant oil or natural gas,or electricity you just can't move.
