  •  Given that Trende is a Republican... (9+ / 0-)

...that's a sentiment we're hoping a lot of Republicans have in this one.

    It matters.

They were unified in sincere support of McDonnell last time.  This time they're "meh."

Meanwhile, TMac is nothing exciting to people, but he'll run the technically proficient campaign that Deeds didn't, he'll likely have significantly more money than Cooch (although the RGA will likely help balance it out and the RGA usually does better ads than the appalling ones the GOP superpacs flooded us with last year), and he's no less personally appealing than Deeds......TMac has his warts, but ultimately no worse a public image with a chance to have a stronger one.

TMac's best advantage so far has been simply that he's been out of the news.  For him, at this stage, no news is good news.  He's going to want to introduce himself later on his own terms.

That also goes for defining his opponent.

"What do you mean "conspiracy"? Does that mean it's someone's imaginings and that the actual polls hovered right around the result?" - petral

My experience here is that media exposure doesn't get off the ground early.  I don't know if that has to do with money......a full-scale ad buy in the D.C. market can easily be a million bucks per week.  And free media is sporadic at this stage.  Really, local media tends to cover controversy, as that is the very nature of the news business, and you don't want to draw controversy if you're TMac.

TMac is busily raising money and raising his profile with activists, hopefully statewide but especially across the urban crescent.

I do hope that TMac starts going after Cooch more visibly this summer.  I want to see the damage inflicted before Labor Day, before Cooch's own coffers are full.
