    How did I overstate?

It gets about 60-65% support in most polling, though people prefer alternatives.

I even specified that it was extremely unpopular for liberals and African Americans.

Nice to see a politician ahead of the curve.

    •  It's no longer a voting issue is what matters (0+ / 0-)

The death penalty is popular now the way gun control was popular in the 90s, meaning yeah the numbers are one-sided, but the majority will not reward or punish anyone on that issue.

The fact that some states are actively repealing the death penalty itself is proof of this.  Governors and legislators are feeling safe to do so.  Yes it's only in blue states, but even there pols didn't feel safe for a long time......Mario Cuomo lost in '94 partly for opposing the death penalty.

Contrast, Tim Kaine won VA-Gov 2005 after Kilgore relentlessly attacked him for opposing the death penalty.  While Kaine worked to inoculate himself by promising to follow the law and apply it, the fact is Kilgore was punished by voters for focusing on something that wasn't their priority at the expense of other things.
