    There's a pretty broad Beltway consensus that the deficit is a much bigger problem than U3 that's still @ 7.7% and U6 still in the mid-teens.  The debate is over increasing taxes v. cutting spending and over what cuts to make.  All of the Very Serious People in both parties worship at the Austerian Altar despite Cheney's casual dismissal of deficits when the GOP was actually in power.

    "Our" side is willing to cut "entitlements" if only the teahadists on the other side are willing to slightly nick a thoroughly bloated Pentagon budget and maybe throw in a tax increase or 2.  At this point, there's clearly a bipartisan consenus that the former cuts should be an end, not a means.

    Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?
