  •  If local news is not going to provide... (14+ / 0-), then we certainly don't need it. Currently, most of it is embarrassingly bad, often inaccurate about the most basic issues and, of course, shallow.

In the dozen years I worked in alternative media (much of it for a five-day-a-week newspaper with 38,000 circulation), we worked for peanuts and, even in the days before Google, managed to come up with a dozen or more reasonably good pieces every day, tying them to state, regional and national issues with just a little bit of legwork. Hard? Absolutely. Often frustrating? Definitely.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.

    •  Even one well researched, in-depth (4+ / 0-)

Story a month would be an improvement for many of these stations.

And some of them do make money. Many are doing better than their newspaper counterparts in the same markets.

    •  How many people wrote the dozen or more (0+ / 0-)

pieces a day? And isn't it more time consuming to produce a TV news clip than a print news article?  Did I misunderstand that the discussion was about local TV news coverage?

      •  yes tv is harder than print (0+ / 0-)

we have to deal with time limits, video errors, etc.

many people who are willing to do an interview for a newspaper won't do one on camera.

newspapers can call a source and get a quote, doesn't work that way for TV.

newspaper can do a long form about a really important but really boring topic, tv can't cause there's no video.

    •  the average newscast (0+ / 0-)

      is 30 minutes.

after commercials it comes to about 22.

take out weather and you have 18 minutes.

you may have had a dozen stories a day.

oh, and don't forget, newspapers don't really do breaking news. once you go to print or have your plan it's 99% done. TV shows are never done until they air, constantly changing, adding, subtracting, etc.

in those 18 minutes producer are expected to come up with at least 3 dozen topics and the video and graphics to go along with them. things you TEAM never had to worry about. TV news and newspapers are different mediums. stop trying to say because a team of newspaper reporter could make a few phone calls that one TV producer should be able to do 3 times as much in less time.
