we recognize the dangers of using cars, and have enacted lots of "car control" over the last fifty years, from requiring makers to make safer cars, banning unsafe ones (w/ grandfathering), and restricting how we use them (speed limits, seat belts, DUIs, and so on), even when we don't think we're being dangerous.

The result is that the rate of car deaths has dropped to one-seventh what it was in 1950 (track the decline yourself).  The rate is about what it was in 1920.  And the absolute number is about what it was in 1950, when we had less than half the population we do now.

None of that came about without repeated intervention by our governments, in our name.   Car control worked, and we didn't even have to take anybody's cars.

Contrast that with guns, where we pretend there isn't a problem and that they're not dangerous, out of fear that any solutions to our gun problem might infringe on our precious lifestyle.  We've gotten rid of gun control and sane gun laws, and many states have even promoted gun use with laws forbidding all sorts of places from restricting carry.  Result:  The number of annual gun deaths is actually going to surpass the number of annual car deaths by 2015, and it already has in several states.

Conservatives need to realize that their Silent Moral Majority is neither silent, nor moral, nor a majority.
