  •  The US is not the UK (3+ / 0-)

And for that matter, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the majority of Europe, Australia and Canada are  not the UK either and they have armed cops.
The UK is in the way minority on armed police. What works for them doesn't work for most people

Violence is American as Apple Pie.

        But evidently you haven't heard: We're a gangster nation, according to a top recced diary;

        Is this true?:

We need to face the fact that we are a gangster nation.
Because if its true that we're a Gangster Nation, who in their right mind WOULDN'T want a gun? And if thats not true why would it be in a recced diary here?

Plenty of people on Dailykos are absolutely convinced this is a police state.

If this really is a police state don't we want LOTS of guns? Hey, police states are BAD!

          •  Sigh... So the solution to violence is... (7+ / 0-)

            MORE violence.

MLK, Gandhi, and numerous other people the left uses as examples of the correct way to do things would strongly disagree with ya.

Course, That's coming from someone who considers violence the absolute last resort.

              MLK:

Finally, I contended that the debate over the question of self-defense was unnecessary since few people suggested that Negroes should not defend themselves as individuals when attacked. The question was not whether one should use his gun when his home was attacked, but whether it was tactically wise to use a gun while participating in an organized demonstration
              Gandhi:
Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest. If we want the Arms Act to be repealed, if we want to learn the use of arms, here is a golden opportunity. If the middle classes render voluntary help to Government in the hour of its trial, distrust will disappear, and the ban on possessing arms will be withdrawn.

It is difficult to see how Gandhi's methods could be applied in a country where opponents of the regime disappear in the middle of the night and are never heard of again. Without a free press and the right of assembly, it is impossible not merely to appeal to outside opinion, but to bring a mass movement into being, or even to make your intentions known to your adversary.

Contemporary to the subject, and an author that I actually respect.

Orwell does have a good point about political change requiring a willingness for lives to be lost.  He's also quite a bit more cynical that Gandhi, and that is understandable considering his fiction.

One thing I do find interesting is that it seems our current media shies away from covering the victims of political action because of the actions of Gandhi and MLK.    The very tools that non-violent resistance depended on are in the hands of those who favor violence.

It's an interesting puzzle, but thank you for sharing the source and some interesting insight into the question.
