that the ar-15 is an incredible feat of engineering that does what it does with amazing precision and a remarkable ease of use, and that when people talk about banning them, they need to understand that they're basically talking about banning perhaps the signature firearm on the market right now. it's akin to trying to regulate the mobile phone market by banning the iphone, and then not understanding why phone enthusiasts might take umbrage to that. so the guy whiffed on his analogy -- so what?

his book is precisely about what's happening in this thread, i.e., the complete inability of either side in the gun debate to even discuss the most cursory issues or elements of the gun control without immediately resorting to rhetoric that inflames the other side and shuts down discussion.

i'm not a gun guy. i don't own any guns, and i'd be perfectly happy with the highest level of gun control possible, including outright bans. but i've also fired ar-15s before, and they are incredibly fun and exhilarating to shoot, not to mention the fact that they are capable of amazing accuracy. so i can see their appeal, and am capable of understanding why people want them without acting like they're demons or something.

    •  I don't like AR-15's. I like Garcia. (3+ / 0-)

I don't find this analogy to be one that's going to convince me I need an AR-15.

Simple as that. No extra rhetoric intended or necessary, because this diary isn't going to sway the debate in either direction. Whatsoever.

Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.

this way? How is that any different from saying "I prefer
      promiscuous, irresponsible sex"?

There can be no protection locally if we're content to ignore the fact that there are no controls globally.
