    •  If it weren't for my uncles... (14+ / 0-)

...we wouldn't have had any weapons around the house.  They told my dad, who was the youngest, that I wouldn't "grow up right" if he didn't take me hunting.  He and I just wanted to hang out together in his machine shop behind the house making things, but no, those uncles of mine.

So we went hunting - twice.  Both times with shotguns borrowed from my uncles.  The second time, my dad had this peculiar bolt action shotgun.  It misfired while he was trying to operate the bolt.  No one was hurt, but the thought that he might have accidentally killed his son so enraged him, that we immediately drove back into town.  We went out to the machine shop.  Right next to the giant metal lathe on which my dad made machine tools for local businesses was a truly gigantic railroad sledge.  My dad was the king of barter town, he had traded somebody something for it.  We went outside and my dad proceeded to hammer the barrel of the shotgun flat.  My uncle wasn't too happy when my dad gave him back his gun.  Needless to say, that was the last time we went hunting.  From then on, we hung out in the machine shop, making stuff.
