    of petroleum contamination of the Gulf long before BP's massive Horizon spill - for example there are 600 known sites of natural seepage (with seepage amounting to about 1/10th the flow rate of BP's gusher - so it's not nearly as bad, but it's not insignificant either).

    Plus estimates of up to an equal amount being chronically "spilled" from human activities.   I guess that's what this diary is about (or could/should be about) - e.g., changing longstanding "business as usual" pollution of the Gulf.

    Another factor is the dead zone from agricultural pollutants washed down the Mississippi - I suspect that that's much more of a problem than either natural or man-made oil releases.
