    one of the primary opposition positions was neutered.

    "People with anti gay beliefs and businesses will be sued or arrested for not serving gay people due to their beliefs. We need to protect their beliefs."
    Actually- this bill doesn't change the statute which is already contained in the Minnesota 1993 Human rights charter.

    So, a gay couple can have a party this weekend and be discriminated against (refused service) in practice

    Whether or not there is a penalty or sanction for said refusal does not change if the this bill to allow gay marriage becomes law.

    In order to address this issue , as pointed out by U of M Law Professor Carpenter, one would have to take this up with the the Human Rights Charter on a separate bill.
