  •  It is somewhat ironic (13+ / 0-)

that I can so easily draw parallels between the drone program and CIA torture and what Wall St. has done to the world.

In all cases, people are doing what they do in a public showing of raw power.  They are in effect saying I can do this because no one can stop me, no one can put any limit on my actions.

The 'fig leaf' legal memos by Yoo and whoever wrote Obama's Drone memos are just that, they're nonsense, gibberish, and never intended to be taken apart and analyzed.  They're the legal equivalent of saying "I have the right to torture and kill you because the sky is blue."  Any legal mind reading the memos has to see that they do not, in fact, comport any legal reasoning, are not a 'good faith' interpretation of law, were never intended to withstand the scrutiny of a court.  Because whoever wrote them knew that they were above courts, above the law, beyond legal challenges.  Whoever wrote them knew that the illegal actions would continue so long as the perpetrators damn well felt like continuing them, and their job as memo-writers was to make a public showing of putting lipstick on that pig.

Wall St. is behaving in exactly the same manner, but without bothering with any fig leaf memos.  In both cases. any apparent compliance with demands of regulators, any filings in court, any showings in Congress before Inquiries, limited and Stooge-like as they are, are just for show.  Just to maintain a public charade of being a 'Nation of Laws', if and when that's not too inconvenient.
