  •  Grass fed beef is not cheaper. For one thing, (0+ / 0-)

they gain weight more slowly.  There may be other factors too; I'm not sure.  But check the prices.  Grass fed beef is the highest priced beef arouhd.

But grass fed beef (and other livestock) have to become the norm.  That's urgent.  Factory farming is unhealthy for humans, brutal for animals, destructive for the land (producing much of the worst run-off problems that plague rivers, bays, and the near-shore ocean).  It has to be stopped.  The rise in price will mean that beef (especially) is more expensive, so people in the US will need to cut back on consumption.

That doesn't mean that animals will no longer be raised for meat and milk.  In fact it's becoming clear that many grasslands won't thrive without herds of grazing animals. THey EVOLVED along with grazing animals, and are more likely to desertify without them.  Maybe in the long run we'll restore a lot of the wildebeasts, zebras, buffalo, and such.  In the meantime, lifestock -- if managed in ways that mimic the effect of the original wild herds, are key to restoring grasslands and limiting desertification.
