  •  Great. Yet another invitation for the baggers (7+ / 0-)

to shriek that Bill Clinton is the Antichrist.

I remember BC shaking hands with a black AIDS patient. Even assuming that it was entirely political, and knowing that both men's hands were doubtless disinfected 3 times over, Clinton did it--acting more like Jesus, I dare say, than GHWB or the GIPPER would have. I'm sure Nancy Reagan would literally have castrated (with her fingernails) anyone even suggesting that Ronnie shake hands with a black AIDS patient.

and politicians who press the flesh all day are undoubtedly encouraged to enage in it ... there is no more risk in shaking hands with an AIDS patient than there is in shaking hands with any random human being, because (in the absence of open wounds on the hands of both individuals) there is no exchange of bodily fluids.  Probably you know this already and are merely making a point about political squeamishness.  But, I still want to make the point that we shouldn't encourage any misinformation to the effect that being around AIDS patients is a contagious risk in the absence of sexual or IV contact.  It's not.  It is fine to hug them, handle their belongings, and etcetera.

      •  That's completely true, but (10+ / 0-)

early on when transmission wasn't well understood yet I remember what a true game-changer it was for AIDS patients when Princess Diana sat with them and shook their hands, over the great protest of the monarchy and public opinion. These things matter. A lot. As the Romney video demonstrates.

won't ever run.  I heard he has a phobia about shaking hands with strangers, and has an aide ever-ready with the Purel.

those hand sanitizers merely strip the oil off the fingers and can contribute to the spread of germs because the user then freely touches things after application, leaving a file of finger oil and who knows what on the surface. I've wondered for a while whether the widespread use of those things isn't causing a resistant strain of nastiness to evolve.
