was put some of their ratfucking little wingnut dead-enders in civil service jobs where you couldn't just come in and fire them. We can't forget that when we think about the Obama era. It wasn't always the case that the new administration could just fire them all.

It wasn't all bad news though. There were wingnuts who bailed out after being dug in like deer ticks.

It's one thing to be a dead-ender in theory. When you are drinking beer and as high on Breitbart as you are on your lite beer.

In practice? There are ways to make somebodies life hell in an office job.

One thing that you can do to such a character is lawfully transfer them to some regional office or branch that they don't want to go to, and they quit on their own and go back to Heritage or AEI. Or never actually give them an assignment. It sucks to have to show up and do nothing all day, every day.

If you think of yourself as a culture warrior, sitting around unassigned with nothing to do, surrounded by people who don't trust you and wouldn't let you do anything but put toner in the copier gets old.

ps I <3 Darcy Burner, and so wish the voters of the Puget Sound district she ran in had elected her to the US House.

You 're spot on! That's the difference between Dems and Rethugs--Bush broke tradition and started to purge career employees and replace with idealogues. Dems would never do something like that. Dems have to understand that this new Rethug party stops at nothing to achieve their goals. That includes politicizing the DOJ. Obama should actively purge (as you said, there are ways to get them to leave!)  career civil servants pushed through politically and replace them through apolitical civil service rules just as had been done in the past. They should also ignore the IG recommendation about demonstrated interest--why have civil rights laws if the lawyers don't want to enforce them? This is a problem throughout Obama's administration. Politically placed civil servants do nothing but create internal fights but they can't be fired without cause--this is why the Civil Service Act was created in the first place, to get rid of political influence--people forget that! Bush, to his great discredit, brought politics into the higher echelons of the civil service. Just another one of the terrible things done in the Bush Administration
