    •  it is from a time long ago (4+ / 0-)

A time when people assumed people would never want to see the same show twice, or watch something they had missed the first time.  So they destroyed the tapes.   It is so mind-boggling and sad that you can only laugh.  Luckily some episodes survived in various bizarre fashions, but 106 episodes are still missing except for audio because a fan taped the episodes on a tape recorder.

As I am probably one of the very few here who watched the first episode live, I should point out the logical inconsistency in the Doctor concealing the Tardis in a junk yard when its chameleon circuits meant it should have blended into the background. Those circuits failed on arrival in London so the Tardis has been stuck with the outer appearance of a police telephone box since.

In a (much) later series, the Master's Tardis is disguised as (IIRC) a long case clock.

All of this is complete nonsense to anybody who is not aware of the series.

BTW, the new run starts at the end of the month.

with the chameleon circuit story at a later date.  All we have is Hartnell acting all surprised that the TARDIS didn't change its shape when they went into the past.

and if you notice in the first episode the Doctor's granddaughter claims to have made up the name TARDIS but of course the term was in use by the Time Lords way before.

I've been recently watching the first 2 seasons.  I don't think Doctor Who has been real big on continuity.  It seemed at times they weren't acting like he had 2 hearts etc., and the whole existence of Susan doesn't really jive with more recent understandings of the doctor.  Also see the whole issue of the Doctor's age.

he tells me LOTS of the surviving older episodes have been found in Canada, because the Canadian TV people didn't send the tapes back to the UK!

there was also, according to fan legend, one particular administrator at the BBC who decided he didn't want to waste storage space on "kiddie show" tapes. never been identified, possibly (CT!) because this horse's patoot later became a big wheel...

The space needed and cost involved in storing tapes for both TV and radio meant a huge chuck-out.

BBC Radio 4extra has this problem with some of the 1950s-70s programming it is re-broadcasting and they have had to remake some programmes entirely using actors with similar voices to the original players.
