The "movie" is one of a series of one-off (if that makes sense) 90 minutes shows depicting either the creation of classic TV series (they did one on "Coronation Street" and "Steptoe and Son" - remade in the US as Sanford and Son) or biopics about British actors - two being Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques. These usually crop up irregularly on their "thinking" channel, BBC Four.

There were a couple of movies in the early days of Dr Who including one, Daleks Invasion Earth  where Peter Cushing stars as the Doctor and a sidekick is played by Bernard Cribbins who went on to appear in several series of the new run. He was also considered for the role of the fourth Doctor.

ages ago. I had no idea that BBC were doing more of these self-histories. Steptoe and Son? really? As an American I might be interested in "Til Death Us Do Part", but Steptoe must have a much bigger following in Britain than Sanfiord ever did here.

Coronation Street is still running and was made by an independent television (commercial) company. It started in the days when there were only 2 stations available in the UK (BBC and ITV). ITV used to consist of a fairly large number of regional companies contributing programmes to a central core network schedule. Most have now been absorbed into a single company - the exceptions being Scottish Television (STV) serving central and north Scotland and Ulster Television (UTV) in Northern Ireland.

I believe "The Curse of Steptoe" is available on DVD though this may only be in PAL format.
